Arts Events: Healing in Concert

If you are a fan of local, original music and passionate about community care, you've come to the right place! My focus is not just about putting on entertaining events (though they are, in fact, a hoot). What really drives this work is a passion for prioritizing the artists and musicians who bring so much value to our communities. I want to send them home with rent money, not gas money.

Beyond that, I also strive to activate the magical energy that is being in a room together and direct it toward important causes that urgently need our collective awareness, assistance and/or resistance.

Storytelling helps us understand each other. Togetherness helps us recognize our connection to and responsibility for each other. This is the lens through which I approach every project I curate. Whether you are an artist or an attendee, I hope you come away feeling more understood, more connected, and more accountable to those around you.

This is how we build a better world. Creatively. Together!

Original Music in a Space that Sings

Songwriter Sanctuary Logo
Songwriter Sanctuary is a (mostly) monthly music series, produced in partnership with Normal Heights United and hosted by San Diego Music Hall of Famer Jeff Berkley, that showcases three local acts performing original music "in the round" in a beautiful, 100 year old sanctuary. All donations are directed to the artists, and no one is turned away for lack of funds. If you're local to or visiting San Diego, you have an open invitation to come check out top tier songwriters that rival anything you'd see in Nashville, Austin, or L.os Angeles.

EVENT PLANNER TIMELINE
  • Early 2000's: Helped living legend and recent SD Music Hall of Famer Cathryn Beeks host Listen Local SD showcases.

  • 2007-2017: Started in an entry level Ops/Admin role at a corporate event marketing company in the destination management industry and worked my way up to Director of Marketing. My mom died and the company got sold in the same year, and that was the loud and clear universal smack upside the head I needed to hit the eject button on 9-5 cubicle life.

  • 2018-2021: Founded Lady Brain Presents - a powerhouse collective of local gender-marginalized creatives who enjoyed shared resources and produced community events around important causes. We were really cooking with gas until the pandemic + fertility issues limited my capacity to lead in that season.

  • 2023: Organized Noted Song Swaps - Casual one-off prompt nights where songwriters are challenged to write songs using each other lyrics.

  • 2023-Current: Took over Songwriter Sanctuary curation for Ben Grace Gilmore & Karyn Thurston Gilmore.
ways to support
It takes a village to produce community arts events, and because we give every cent possible to our performers, I am looking for a volunteer village to help with:
  • Funding: donate to our series, purchase or promote season passes, help us secure sponsorships (especially for funding access/ASL!), write grants, support general business/admin efforts, etc.
  • Promo: traditional media, social media, print, merch, street team, etc.
  • Content: photography, videography, live-streaming/virtual ticketing .
  • Business: general advice/savvy in areas where my brain gets all leaky, like taxes, for example.
  • Meds: Tums, Excedrin Migraine, CBD, THC, pre-rolls, Xanax. (I kid, I kid...legally, anyway).
Event Organizer Testimonials:
"Songwriter Sanctuary is the warmest place in the San Diego music scene. Acoustically perfect space. Very talented artists playing a mere 10 feet in front of us. Presented with a huge heart. Gotta be there."
-David Peters, Songwriter Sanctuary Season Pass Holder

“I catch it every time I possibly can! It’s food for my soul...I always leave feeling a part of something creative, something positive.”
-Unison Colthurst, Songwriter Sanctuary Season Pass Holder

“It’s a wonderful and physically comfortable space for enjoying beautiful music. I love seeing old friends there. And I love the format, where you hear from songwriters and the energy of the show is well-balanced between multiple artists.”
-Amy Day, Songwriter Sanctuary Attendee

“Being introduced to new musicians loving their life's work fills my heart...It feels like a family gathering where we can let go of the differences that divide and simply listen, laugh, and be together.”
=Soleil Hepner, Songwriter Sanctuary Season Pass Holder

“In two words: SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE.”
-Kris Calabio, Songwriter Sanctuary Attendee

“Calm, beautiful space with lovely acoustics, amazingly-talented musicians and friendly, focused audience.”
-Nicole Ervin-Fugiel, Songwriter Sanctuary Attendee

“Intimate, glorious sound, an audience of truly engaged listeners, a respectful environment that values artists, and a feeling of real joy around sharing people's original work together.”
-Josh Weinstein, Songwriter Sanctuary Alumni Artist

“I appreciate the well thought out overall organization of the event, that it runs on time, and that artists are treated with such love and respect. Unique. Serene. Comfortable. Welcoming.”
-Cathryn Beeks, Songwriter Sanctuary Alumni Artist

“It was the first time I fully enjoyed playing music live. Felt free...I opened myself to let Love play through me, and it was such a safe space for that, and I had a blast.”
-Jordan Mageo-Sausser, Songwriter Sanctuary Alumni Artist

“One does not often get to play in a room like this anymore...The room itself SINGS - the sound is immaculate... A true music-lovers, story-lovers paradise within four walls. Songwriter Sanctuary is a safe-space to do something really truly dangerous: to be authentic to oneself, and THAT is priceless to both the performer and the audience.”
-Tori Roze, Songwriter Sanctuary Alumni Artist

“This organization is built to better and empower artists, the community, the city, and the world. It's a powerful movement to be a part of, whether as an artist that's a member of Lady Brain Collective, or as an attendee of one of their community gatherings, or as a recipient of the generosity they provide to multiple deserving causes. This is a much needed, unifying force in our world.”
-Jules Stewart - Musician, Graphic Designer, Lady Brain Collective Member and Collaborator

"That was an amazing night! The way the room came alive — we all shared something beautiful. Thank you again for making that possible."
